About APPA

The American Public Power Association (APPA) is the service organization for the nation's more than 2,000 community-owned electric utilities that serve more than 45 million Americans.

It was created in 1940 as a non-profit, non-partisan organization.

Its purpose is to advance the public policy interests of its members and their consumers, and provide member services to ensure adequate, reliable electricity at a reasonable price with the proper protection of the environment.

APPA is governed by a regionally representative Board of Directors.

APPA's Board of Directors approved a Five-Year Strategic Membership Plan that identifies key success factors for achieving the Association's membership goals.  Along with the revised APPA Mission Statement and new organizational values, the plan provides a roadmap for enhancing member value, strengthening key relationships with allied industry organizations, and retaining and recruiting regular utility and corporate associate members.
