GRANTS
Description: A key benefit of membership in DEED is the ability to apply for funding through a DEED grant. Members are encouraged to apply for grants (up to $75,000) to help finance innovative projects. Grants can be used to improve utilities by increasing efficiency, reducing costs, investigating new technologies, offering new services, and improving processes and practices to better serve customers.
The grants, typically $25,000-$50,000, can support pilot projects, new technology demonstrations, early commercialization projects, and the development of best practices. Any issue encountered by members (such as reliability, safety, security, energy efficiency, telecommunications, and the environment) is an appropriate topic for a grant.
Applications: Applications are available in two formats: MS Word and PDF. We have kept the DEED grant application forms as simple as possible so even those utilities with minimal staff resources are able to apply quickly and easily for project funding.
Deadlines: There are two deadlines: February 15 and August 15. These dates coincide with the spring and fall meetings of the DEED Board.

How DEED Student Research Grants/Internships Help Utilities
STUDENT ASSISTANCE
Description: DEED offers ten, $4,000 student research grants and internships (scholarships) each year to college students who work with DEED member utilities on research projects or internships. These scholarships serve as a purposeful and beneficial link between communities and utilities. Students gain experience, credit, and money for their research or assistance. In return, utilities attract positive publicity and talent to their utility.
If the idea of student assistance is appealing to you, contact your local university to let students know of this opportunity with the DEED Program. For your convenience, DEED has provided a sample letter and flyer to send to university officials.
Once you’ve established a contact at a university, let DEED know by emailing DEED@APPAnet.org. We can put your contacts on a mailing list to receive semi-annual information about the scholarships.
Student Eligibility Requirements: Only students studying in energy-related disciplines from accredited colleges or universities in the U.S. or Canada are eligible for student research grants/internships. Applicants will not be discriminated against on the basis of sex, race, religion, national origin, or citizenship.
Applications: The application is available in PDF [36KB] and in MS Word [719KB] format. Applications must be completed and submitted with all required signatures and an academic transcript. A copy of the application must also be sent to the DEED regional board director. Find the regional board director for your state.
Deadlines:February 15 and October 15.
