Quarterly News Brief on Geothermal and Wind Energy (January 2009)
The APPA-NRECA outreach team continues to bring opportunities to consumer-owned utilities to participate, share and learn about integrating wind and geothermal technologies into their power supply portfolios. Conducted in partnership with Western Area Power Administration and DOE's Wind Powering America and Geothermal initiatives, these activities aim to help utilities weigh their options as demands for supplying renewable energy grow in their service areas.
SRP Makes Investment In Geothermal Energy
The Salt River Project in Arizona recently signed a 30-year agreement to purchase 49 MW of geothermal energy from a plant in Southern California. Beginning in March 2010, production wells will tap into heated water reservoirs to produce electricity from naturally occurring geothermal steam thousands of feet below the surface of California's Imperial Valley. We are continuing to pursue clean renewable energy sources to add to our resource mix,” said Richard Hayslip, assistant general manager of environmental, land and risk management for SRP.The geothermal plant, owned and operated by Hudson Ranch Power I, LLC, a renewable energy development company, will help to meet the utility’s goal of making renewable resources accountable for 15% of SRP’s total load. Currently, SRP’s renewable portfolio is 5% of load. (Source: Public Power Daily July 12, 2007)
