Given the current business environment, public power-served businesses large and small are feeling the effects of tighter credit, reduced consumer spending, higher unemployment, and the potential of increased energy and environmental costs.

Particularly in these difficult economic times, energy cost and reliability are increasingly important to business customers. It is equally important for your utility to communicate with large customers and remind them that their business is important to the utility, to the prosperity of the community, to its citizens, and how your local utility can help with efficient energy usage.

To assist utilities in these efforts APPA has reconstituted a campaign launched in 2004 with a different focus. The new Public Power Is Good for Business initiative provides a host of products and services to assist public power utilities and promote what they are doing in the areas of energy management, conservation, efficiency and reduction of carbon emissions for business customers. For more information visit www.PublicPowerGoodforBusiness.org.

APPA has partnered with the Department of Energy’s Industrial Technologies Program, which offers training, assessments and technical tip sheets on energy efficiency for industrial customers. The training, assessments and tip sheets are offered at no, or low cost to utilities and their customers.

2010 Industrial Utility Webinar Series
APPA has partnered with the Department of Energy’s Industrial Technologies Program to present a series of industrial customer efficiency webinars for 2010. These webinars will cover a variety of industrial sector energy topics from financial mechanisms for implementing energy efficiency projects to exploring combined heat and power.

Utilities are the target audience for these webinars, however, you are welcome to invite your industrial customers if they have an interest in the topic.

Participation in these webinars is free.

Midwest Electronic Book of Industrial Resources
APPA recently co-sponsored, with DOE and the National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO), the Midwest Industrial Energy Efficiency Exchange, September 9-10 in Detroit. More than 300 attended; mostly industrial customers, but also vendors and consultants. The program was free, hosted by Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, and encouraged utilities to invite their large customers to hear about the many energy efficiency services and programs available to them.

The Midwest Electronic book of Industrial Resources provides information on the energy efficiency resources available to industrial customers in the Midwest.

Industrial Energy Efficiency Handbook: A Guide to Reducing Energy Costs at Your Facility

In today's economy, industrial customers are increasingly looking for ways to reduce power costs. This new handbook available from the APPA Product Store identifies best practices for saving energy at manufacturing facilities by employeing strategies that can be implemented for little or no cost. The handbook also recommends retrofits and system changes that provide opportunities for large gains, which will not only pay off the initial investment, but will continue bringing in energy cost savings year after year. Order this handbook

Tip Sheets for Industrial Customers

APPA and the Industrial Technologies Program have developed a series of tip sheets which can be customized with an individual utility's logo for distribution to its industrial customers. Click here for the tip sheets and instructions for customizing with your logo.

Features of the Program

A Webinar was presented by APPA, the Industrial Technologies Program of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Western Area Power Administration of the feature of this program. The program is designed to help improve energy efficiency by bolstering cooperation among utilities and large industrial customers. The presentations below address the no-and low-cost DOE resources (software, training and energy assessments), utility experience about how to become more energy efficient by partnering with industrial customers and utilizing DOE resources and information about the DOE Plant Energy Certification Program.

Hosting Industrial Energy Efficiency Training at Your Utility

Through the Industrial Technologies Program utilities can host training sessions designed to teach industrial manufacturing managers, plant personnel, and other industrial manufacturing end-users how to reduce energy use, while saving money and increasing plant efficiency and performance. Learn more
