What is biomass:
When the sun's energy is stored within materials like plant and animal (organic matter) it is called biomass. Biomass is renewable because it takes far less time to develop than fossil fuels which take millions of years to make.
Renewable biomass may include the use of:
* Agricultural residue
* Animal waste
* Landfill gas
* Pulp/wood waste from wood industry or waste materials from the floor of forests (often removed to prevent fires)
* Energy crops (corn, sugar, etc)
* Biodiesel (in a variety of classifications) to reduce the use of fossil fuels in combustion (fleet vehicles, school buses, boilers, cars, utilities)
* Soy and other agricultural alternatives to lubricating oils in oil-filled equipment at utilities or industrial customers
Check out the biodiesel tax incentives (page 65) included in The Energy Policy Act of 2005 that last until 2008 for public power customers.
