APPA's Spring Education Institute, set for May 6-10 in Anaheim, Calif., will offer a series of courses designed for accounting and finance personnel of public power utilities. The courses have been updated and can be taken either individually or together, as a series. The classes are highly interactive — instructors incorporate real-life public power examples, discussion and exercises to help apply concepts learned in class.

The Public Utility Accounting course, May 6-7, is aimed at those who are new to utility accounting practices or unfamiliar with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's uniform system of accounts. It covers accounting procedures, uniform system of accounts and utility accounting subsystems. This course is led by Jerry McKenzie, senior associate with MGT of America, Inc., who has over 20 years of industry experience. Participants will receive a complimentary copy of APPA’s new Public Utility Accounting manual.

The Work Order and Asset Management Accounting class, May 8, offers tips on how to streamline processes that support work order asset management accounting and job costing. The instructor, Russ Hissom, CPA and partner with Baker Tilly Virchow Krause, has 30 years of experience in working with utilities on financial and operational issues.

In the Advanced Public Utility Accounting course, May 9-10, participants will learn about the more complex aspects of accounting theory and practice, including financial statement presentation and analysis, benchmarking, capital structure and its importance in utility strategic planning, alternatives to traditional financing, accounting for investments and derivative financial instruments, functionalizing, accounting for impairment of long-lived assets and special topics, such as environmental accounting and unbilled revenues. This course will be led by Russ Hissom. Participants will receive a copy of APPA’s new Advanced Public Utility Accounting manual.

Attendees can earn credits toward their professional certifications by attending these courses. Each two-day class provides 15 continuing professional education credits (CPEs) and the one-day course is worth 7.5 CPEs. APPA also offers continuing education units (CEUs) and professional development hours (PDHs).

The Spring Institute also features in-depth courses on overhead distribution systems, two week-long certificate programs — the Energy Efficiency Management Certificate Program and the Public Power Manager Certificate Program — as well as updated versions of APPA's basic, intermediate and advanced cost of service and retail rate design and financial planning courses. All courses will be held at the Sheraton Park Hotel.

There is a $100 discount for those who attend more than one course (or who attend with a colleague) and a $50 early registration discount. This event is co-sponsored by the Southern California Public Power Authority.
